Candy History and Origins
The origin of candy can be traced to the ancient Egyptians who combining fruits and nuts with honey. Around the same time, Greeks used honey to make candied fruits and flowers. First modern candies were made in 16th century and sweet manufacturing developed rapidly into an industry during the early 19th century.
The history of candy dates back to the caveman who created the idea of candy by eating honey combs and honey. Candy can be traced back as far as 1500BC to the ancient Egyptians who used honey and made candy by adding figs, nuts, dates and spices.
The first chocolate bar was made in 1847 by Joseph Fry in England. He discovered a way for mixing melted cacao butter, cocoa powder and sugar to create a paste that could be pressed into a mold. It is said that the origin of the candy canes stem back to Cologne, Germany around 1670. In the 1920's Bob McCormack began making candy canes as special Christmas treats. In the 1950's the first candy cane machine was introduced by Gregory Keller that aided in manufacturing and mass producing the candy canes.
Two men from Nashville, John C. Wharton and William Morris, patented the first modern cotton candy machine in 1897. In 1900, another American, Thomas Patton introduced a slightly different cotton candy machine.
It is believed that candy dates back to the ancient Egyptians at around 2000BC. The first ''candies'' were made from honey mixed with fruit or nuts. Sugar candy was invented by the Indians about 250AD.
